I love social media- 2007 was my first discovery into the world we call Facebook. My trusty photographer friend Mark put me onto it and l have never looked back since. My time with social media has of course had its ups and downs but l am still in love with this sort of communication. Having grown up in the era before computers were“hip”. I still find it fascinating how we can communicate with each other so quickly with the press of a button. With this goes the sadness of the lack of verbal communication with many people. Gone are the days where you would just pick up the phone and have an hour chat with your friend. A chat which would catch you up on all things fun and important or not. These days lines of communication can become very brief and one sided.
I personally love a good chat – and am known for my long convo’s on answering machines. I figure l am paying for the call so l may as well say as much as l can before that pesky cut off sound.
I think one of the saddest things about social media is the misinterpretation of conversations. Things that are never meant to be hurtful can be taken out of context and cause huge dramas. The same with all this online bullying that occurs-people can be such jerks hiding behind a key board. It’s not cool and it should not be tolerated. It is unacceptable and we must be all vigilant and aware of the goings on and step into prevent it.
Having said that social media has become an amazing business tool. It can be used so successfully for business marketing and the like. Many business were cautious to begin with and rightly so. But with the years the importance of marketing via social media has been acknowledged. After all it is a great way to get your brand out there. When you build a following on social media, it enables you to have immediate access to old clients/customers, new clients and of course loyal customer’s. Social media is known to humanize you brand / business. People like to do business with people in real time. Therefore social media is the ideal platform for small and large business.
Like any marketing strategy it is important to get it right. There is nothing worse than going to a business Facebook page for example and seeing there is no update for 6-12 months. It looks sloppy, like you can’t be bothered. Along with this is that there is little excuse for it- so you have no time- that’s when you outsource. An in expensive way to get your brand across. Why wouldn’t you employ a social media manager to do it for you?
The longer you wait to get it right the more you have to lose. Social media marketing can lead to more customers/clients, more conversion and more loyalty. Plus we should remind ourselves that it is here to stay.
