With an aging population it is imperative to understand that we all need some kind of support at some point in our lives. Life can become difficult as one ages and one’s child/ren leave the family home to begin their life into adulthood. As one begins to age into their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, adjusting to supported accommodation can be complex and difficult on the individual and family unit. As one ages, one can begin to grieve the loss of their independence and struggles to cope with the increasing level of support needs.
One of the easiest ways and best ways to support older adults is just by listening to them. We learn when we listen, not when we talk. Listening to the needs of others, their stories, concerns and opinion is very important. Every quality minute spent with a older person counts regardless how trivial it may seem to you at the time. You can brighten someone’s day by spending even 5 minutes of your time. Next time you see and older person, try to engage them in a conversation for what they have to offer is so many years of wisdom…make it memorable for them.
Remember that that brief encounter with them that may seem like a trivial interaction could be the one thing that brightens their day. Make a difference in the lives of an older person today.
